Giving Back at The Peninsula Beijing

The Peninsula is known worldwide for its unparalleled, personalised service, but beyond the hotel walls, the staff of The Peninsula Beijing shared its unique spirit of hospitality with in-house disabled staff, overseas students around China and children in need in Beijing with a series of CRS initiatives throughout 2013.

An annual education programme, 'The Study Road' offers young, ambitious students and professionals the opportunity to develop their leadership skills by travelling The Silk Road and engaging with diverse milieus along the way. Over the course of a few months, a team of students cycled across seven countries including Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and China. The Peninsula Beijing assisted the students by providing comfortable, world-class accommodation during their stay in the Chinese capital.

The hotel and its staff also work regularly with local organisation, 'House of Love'. Located in Sun Village of Shun Yi, ‘House of Love’ is home to Beijing’s children and youth whose parents have been incarcerated and are therefore unable to care for them. Various departments of the hotel showed their support by delivering ice cream to the orphanage and organising tree planting and other leisure activities to improve the children’s living standards

Closer to home, The Peninsula Beijing assisted its in-house disabled staff with a series of learning programmes throughout 2013. Dedicated to providing equal opportunity, eleven staff with disabilities have been hired in various departments including Finance, Human Resources, Training, Public Relations and front-line departments such as Front Office and Food & Beverage. To ensure a comfortable and supportive working environment, The Peninsula Beijing’s General Manager Joseph Sampermans hosted several lunch meetings to gain insight into their backgrounds, opinions and work life at the hotel. The Learning and Development Centre has also launched a 'Sign Language Training Course' for general staff, enabling all staff to communicate more effectively.
